Literary Events
The Literary Events programme at Bristol Grammar School is a collaboration between School, pupils and publishers. The rĂ´le of the Literary Events Organiser is to stimulate reading and creative writing by bringing renowned authors into the School to work with pupils in lessons, lead discussions about the writing process and give talks to larger, public audiences.
We believe our programme is unique of its kind; it is greatly valued by the School as well as by the authors who visit:
“I have been visiting schools throughout the UK for the past fifteen years and am passionate about talking to children about books, both my own and those by other authors. I think it is so important for children to understand that authors are real people, not remote figures in ivory towers. Children can build a connection with an author and books become relevant to their lives. And once a child is hooked on reading for life the rewards are priceless. I still remember my visit to Bristol Grammar School as being an outstanding example of an environment where books and the enjoyment gained from them was placed centre stage. Long may it continue to be so.”
Dame Jacqueline Wilson
Since the programme started, in 2000, the number of events has increased from one to 26 per year. The authors are very high-profile with audiences ranging from twenty (in-house) to four hundred (public).
Every term hosts a ‘season’ of seven or eight literary events. At least two of these are public, evening events, alternating between adult and children’s writers. Now well-established, these popular, public events with low ticket prices sometimes include light refreshments and always feature live music.

Three creative writing prizes have been launched and sustained. Partnerships have been forged with several publishing houses. Links with Penguin and Puffin are particularly strong (Allen Lane, Penguin’s founder, having been educated at BGS). We also work closely with The Bath Festival of Children’s Literature and The Bristol Festival of Ideas.
