BGS student wins two Latin competitions

29.05.2012 - Congratulations Rex

Congratulations to Rex Stretton-Pow, a member of the Upper Sixth at Bristol Grammar School, who has won the Malvern St James CICERO cup for UK translation.  This is a prestigious national competition which involves translation of a fiendish Latin prose text on a subject relevant to modern society (politics, government, citizenship). Rex was awarded £150 and a signed book by Ingo Gildenhard. Congratulations also to Duncan Shepherd (U6) who came fourth in this competition. Bristol Grammar School is also awarded the cup for the winning school, to hold for one year.

In addition to this, Rex also took first place in the ARLT Latin Reading Competition, a national Latin reading competition. You can see details and listen to Rex reading here: http://www.arlt.co.uk/readingresults2012.php

The passage for performance this year came from Virgil’s Aeneid, Book II (Aeneas escaping from Troy).
The competition for this award is intense, and Rex should be highly congratulated for such an impressive achievement.
