OB rows around Great Britain
OB rows around Great Britain
20.07.2010 - Captain Nick Dennison's rowing success
Old Bristolian Captain Nick Dennison (1993-2000) has set a new world record along with his team mate Captain Hamish Reid by being the first pair to successfully row the 2,100 miles around the coast of Great Britain. The aim of their row is to raise £20,000 for both the Army Benevolent Fund and the Help the Heroes charity, which are charities set up to help servicemen and women whose lives have been affected by the ongoing wars.
Completing the row in their twenty-four foot ocean-going rowing boat battling strong winds and high seas took extreme discipline and commitment, especially as some days Nick and Hamish had to row for up to twenty hours. However after fifty days at sea the pair completed their challenge and rowed into the record books at about 3pm on Thursday 1 July.
Captain Dennison told the
Evening Post
: "The high point for me was when we were in the Western Isles. It's just one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.
"We hit some strong winds 80 miles east of Edinburgh and we were going so fast that we ended up surfing down the waves which were 7-8 metres high. We were going at more than 14 knots – I've never been so scared in my life.”
Congratulations to both Nick and Hamish for completing this challenge and hope you make your target of £20,000.
