27.04.2012 - National essay-writing competition winner.

Congratulations to Isabel Murphy who is the overall winner of a national essay-writing competition in French (Sixth-form category) organised by St Hilda’s College Oxford. Isabel is in the Lower Sixth at Bristol Grammar School and is studying ‘A’ levels in French, Spanish, English and Maths. She hopes to continue her language studies beyond BGS, aiming for a university course in French and Spanish, so when she saw the competition advertised on St Hilda’s website, it immediately caught her eye.

Entrants in the Sixth-form category were required to watch the French Film On Connait La Chanson and rewrite the final scenes in English. The film is in the style of Dennis Potter's Singing Detective and features the characters singing lots of French songs from the 1950s onwards so Isabel chose to write her entry in the style of a screenplay and also incorporated suitable French songs into her work. The judges were particularly impressed with the imaginative way in which she interwove the songs into the script of her entry and created interesting character-pairings.

Commenting on her success, Izzy said “I was delighted to receive an email from the Head of Medieval and Modern Languages at St Hilda's College, Oxford saying that I had won the competition.” She wins £100 and her French teacher receives an invitation to an Oxford Conference.  It is a great honour for Izzy to be awarded this prize, as the overall standard was extremely high.
