Putting the world to rights

07.02.2012 - Model United Nations at BGS

Saturday 4 February saw almost 200 students from 12 schools gather in the Great Hall at Bristol Grammar School for a Model United Nations event. While the real UN was debating the problems in Syria, the students gathered at Bristol Grammar School faced their own (thankfully imaginary!) emergency in the form of Russia’s occupation of Bulgaria and Greece. Delegates were unable to find a solution to this problem in the afternoon session, but the morning had seen many interesting resolutions debated and passed, covering topics ranging from nuclear power to the problem of obesity.
Students had prepared in advance to represent at total of over 30 of the United Nations, in areas including politics, economics, environment and human rights. 32 BGS students from Year 10 and above took part representing different countries, each specialising in one area (politics, economics, health, environment, security, human rights).
As hosts, Bristol Grammar School also provided the Secretary General and chairs for each of the committees. Our thanks go to Craig, Sanya, Gavin, Gabriel, Jonathan, Ben, Toby and Will who fulfilled these roles, as well as organising the whole day – from inviting the schools to providing the orange squash! They did a marvellous job, and Craig handled the opening ceremony and the General Assembly with gravitas. Another 11 BGS students acted as runners and were much praised for their politeness, helpfulness and hard work.
The prize for the top delegation went to a group from KES Bath, representing the UK but our congratulations go to all those who took part and made the day so enjoyable and successful.
