Menu of Sports

Whether their goal is elite performance, team spirit or just the enjoyment of participation, the rich range of both curriculum and co-curricular sporting opportunities provided at Bristol Grammar School ensures all our students can get involved, find their niche and fulfil their potential.

The excitement that comes from playing team sports starts in our Infant School, where the youngest children begin to develop their skills and their passion, a love of sport that may stay with them for life. Team sports evolve further in Years 3 and 4. Children are given firm foundations in Rugby, hockey, netball, football, rounders and cricket. There are regular ‘friendly fixtures’ and coaching games against children from other schools. By fielding three or four teams whenever there is the opportunity, we ensure every child who wants to, has the opportunity to take part, something we aim to sustain by fielding C and D teams where appropriate further up the School. The early success at county, regional and national level of our Year 5 and 6 Junior School teams is continued right the way through to the 1st and 2nd teams at Senior School level.

Our co-curricular activities programme is a unique strength of our School and a valuable opportunity for each child to discover what they most enjoy about sport, competition and physical exercise. It provides some with the opportunity for additional coaching in their chosen team sports and allows others to develop their skills and their interests in a wide range of both competitive and non-competitive activities. Fencing, dance, karate, badminton, trampolining and judo are just some of choices on the menu. Many older students enjoy the use of the gym and the specialist classes for keep fit and such as Pilates and Boxercise.

Supported by a rich programme of House competition including an annual Sport’s Day with it’s a full range of track and field events, Bristol Grammar School sport has something for everyone, offers inspiration for anyone and encourages the pursuit of excellence for the many who go on to achieve national and international recognition in their chosen field.

"I loved sport at School. There were lots of opportunities to try different things. Sports Day was great. I think that’s where I became keen on sprinting. School sport was a stepping stone into club competition, where I got a real taste for running and beating the other girls."
