Literary Events at BGS form a vibrant, vital part of school life. Every term hosts a 'season' of seven or eight, high-profile author visits. Authors are invited to speak to different age groups about their work and sometimes run creative writing workshops. The opportunity to meet writers and understand more about the writing process provides inspiration for young people. It encourages wider reading and the confidence to experiment with writing for themselves. Each term three of these literary events are open to the public. Ticket prices are kept low and include both live music and light refreshments. All are most welcome to attend.
We have had many authors who have visited the School in the past two years such as Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Chris Ryan, Claire Tomalin, Kate Adie, John Hegley, Jasper Fforde...and the roll call does not end there!
Here is what Jacqueline Wilson had to say about her visit to BGS in 2007:
"I have been visiting schools throughout the UK for the past 15 years and am passionate about talking to children about books, both my own and those by other authors. I think it is so important for children to understand that authors are real people, not remote figures in ivory towers. Children can build a connection with an author and books become relevant to their lives. And once a child is hooked on reading for life the rewards are priceless. I still remember my visit to Bristol Grammar School as being an outstanding example of an environment where books and the enjoyment gained from them was placed centre stage. Long may it continue to be so."
