Old Bristolians

This website is regularly updated with details of forthcoming events and other news of interest to Old Bristolians. So that the Society can communicate quickly and effectively with its members, members are asked to advise the Old Bristolians Office of any changes in their e-mail addresses.

The Old Bristolians’ Society (OBS) has existed for more than 100 years. Its main objectives are:

  • To allow former pupils and staff to maintain contact and to keep in touch with the School
  • To support the School, both financially and non-financially

Around 1,700 former pupils and staff are members of OBS which is a separate entity from the School and run almost exclusively by volunteers. The President of OBS holds office for a year. The other Officers of OBS and its Committee members are chosen by election and normally stay in post for a longer period.

Members of OBS can participate in and benefit from

  • a regular programme of social events, including the Annual Dinner held in the Great Hall in March each year, Dinners in London, Oxford, and Cambridge and reunions of year groups
  • the Old Bristolians’ Sports Club with its excellent sporting and social activities at the Society’s War Memorial Playing Field at Failand
  • careers advice and networking opportunities both for undergraduates and other Old Bristolians
  • a twice yearly magazine “Bristolienses” produced by OBS containing news of the School, the Society, and Old Bristolians throughout the world
  • the School Chronicle on request

OBS contributes some 30% of its subscription income to the School through the Michael Booker Bursary Scheme, school prizes, scholarships, and travel awards. OBS also has a Discretionary Fund which allocates sums in the low hundreds of pounds to Old Bristolians in further education who wish to undertake a project with defined benefits for themselves and the community within which they plan to carry out their work.

Old Bristolians who are not already members of OBS are encouraged to become members and thereby put something back into the BGS community. An application form and a direct debit form are available for downloading from this website-please join today!
