Bursary Funding: thank you

Friday 9th May 2008, 9:19am

Ensuring that all able children have an equal chance to attend BGS is an aspiration at the heart of BGS.  Our work to increase Bursary funding continues, and thanks to generous trusts and individual donors, we are able to increase the assistance available, in addition to the endowment income which funds School Assisted Places Scheme.

This year we thank:-

Mr P W E Brown's Charitable Trust which has funded three 'Bill Brown Bursaries' awarded for September 2008 entrants.  Bill Brown came from a humble family background and began his working life in Bristol Docks, from there he created a successful engineering business.   Although Bill Brown didn’t attend BGS himself, the grant is in keeping with the spirit of hiss remarkable life and the bursaries are intended for exceptional children from low income families.

The Richard Davies Charitable Foundation which has made an initial grant to build up a capital sum for future Bursaries.  It is hoped that this generous start will encourage other lump sum gifts and grow the endowment fund in due course.

The Denman Charitable Trust which has match funded Sixth Form students at BGS from the maintained sector.

The John James (Bristol) Foundation which has made ongoing grant assistance to BGS Bursaries for over twenty  years.

The Ogden Trust which match funds Sixth Form Science awards for students coming from the maintained sector and who wish to study Science and Mathematics at A level and University – awards are match funded by a business partner.

The Ogden/BGS Business Partners:  Nick Baldwin Property Development, The Denman Trust, Heathcross Ltd, Peter Rilett, South Gloucs Bus & Coach Co.

The Old Bristolians Society for grants towards the Michael Booker Memorial Bursary Scheme.

The Patricia Stuckey Memorial Award  gifted by OB Colonel Dick Stuckey, to be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster and trustees.

We also thank all those individual donors, many of whom are OBs, who give towards the Michael Booker Memorial Bursary Scheme.

Help with Fees: BGS runs its own Assisted Places Scheme, and funds are also available from the Michael Booker Memorial Bursary Scheme which assists in special cases of hardship.   BGS also offers Ogden Trust Sixth Form Science Awards which are match funded by businesses.   All funding at BGS is directed towards means tested Bursaries.   Scholarships do not carry financial reward, but are offered on merit and Scholars follow an enriched and extended programme.

Enquiries on fees assistance should be made to the Finance Office.  Bursaries (help with Fees) are awarded on financial need, following a rigorous but fair assessment which may include a home visit.   Applications for Bursaries should be submitted with entrance application forms and allocations are made in February shortly after the entrance examinations.
