Excellent year for Oxbridge offers at BGS

Friday 1st February 2008, 10:28am
A staggering seventeen BGS students are celebrating after being offered places at Oxbridge this year. The school on average receives twelve offers so seventeen equates to a truly excellent year, reflecting the hard work of some exceptional students.

BGS is already in the top 100 schools for Oxbridge entry in the UK according to a Sutton Trust Survey compiled last year, so this is a further boost for the school’s already strong academic record.

Amongst the students who have received offers are:
Emma Barton (Wadham College, Oxford. Classics)
Oliver Brady (Braesnose College, Oxford.  Biology)
Charlie Draper (St Johns, Cambridge. History)
George Miles (Lincoln, Oxford. Physiology)
Alex Mohan (Jesus, Oxford. History)
Tina Nandha (St Edmund Hall, Oxford. PPE)
Liam Robinson (Corpus Christi, Oxford. Medicine)
Jenifer Hine (Newnham, Cambridge. Engineering)
Richard Lismore-John (Queens, Cambridge. Classics)
Tom Lovering (Trinity, Cambridge. Maths)
Thomas Wraith (Trinity Hall, Cambridge.  Music)
Rong Zhou (St Johns, Cambridge. Maths)

It is no surprise that Tom Lovering is going to study Maths at Cambridge as last summer he represented Britain in the International Mathematical Olympiad in Hanoi. In going to Trinity College, Cambridge, Tom is following in the footsteps of many renowned mathematicians including John Dee (1527-1608), author of an important 'Mathematical Preface' to the first English translation of Euclid's 'Elements of Geometry'; Isaac Newton (1642-1727), who formulated a version of calculus and the principles of universal gravitation; Charles Babbage (1791-1871), inventor of the Difference Engine (an early mechanical computer); and G.H. Hardy (1877-1947), author of 'A Mathematician's Apology; and Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920).

Headmaster Dr David Mascord said, “We are very proud of these students for achieving offers from Oxford and Cambridge. Their hard work and dedication during their time at BGS has provided them with a unique opportunity to study at one of Britain’s top universities. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing of their future successes.”
