Sunoo Park, Year 11 Student, looks set to join the West Country inventors hall of fame as she heads for the national finals of Young Engineer for Britain competition. Sunoo wowed judges at the recent West of England regional finals of the Young Engineer for Britain competition this month, scooping first prize for the best integration and application of electronics category. Sunoo developed this at School as part of her GCSE in D &T electronic products project.
The regional final took place at the headquarters of the Royal Naval Air Squadron at Yeovilton, where Sunoo competed against 53 contestants from the region aged between 12 and 18. Sunoo, a year 11 student who has just completed her GCSEs, is now set to compete in the national finals of the prestigious competition in March 2009.
Sunoo's award winning entry saw her research and develop a prototype device that monitors the body temperature of a child taking part in winter sports. The promising young engineer designed an innovative electronic circuit, contained in a custom-built, child-friendly durable case that can be easily attached to ski helmets or other winter clothing. The display gives a clear indication to parents of the child's condition; so avoiding the dangers of hypothermia. Sunoo's design is subject to a patent application.
Sunoo says: " I have always liked skiing and have really enjoyed developing ideas to help with my favourite sport. Looking back since the time I started skiing and remembering all the smaller children on the slopes, I started to think about a safety device that would stop them from getting hurt."
