Top A level students at Bristol Grammar School

2008 has been another outstanding year for A-level students at BGS, seeing 58% of students gaining A grades, and 22 students achieving four or more straight As.

Celebrating exceptional success include two students, Hannah Laurence and Oliver Brady.  Hannah not only achieved a grade A in Psychology, but also ranked within the awarding body AQA’s top 5 marks in the country.  Having participated in this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival with BGS, she also achieved grade A in Drama and Theatre Studies, and came within awarding body Edexcel’s top 10 in the UK in addition to being awarded a third A in Biology.  Hannah is planning to take a gap year before deciding what to study at university.  Hannah explains why her achievements mean so much to her: “I’ve struggled for years with dyslexia but the support of my parents, BGS and the Bristol Dyslexia Centre have helped me to meet my potential.”

Meanwhile, Oliver achieved 5 straight As in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Geography and Biology and is now set to go to Oxford University to study Biology.

Commenting on his success, Oliver said:  “I’m really pleased to have done so well in my A-levels, and I’d love to go on to study for a PhD following my degree.  I joined Bristol Grammar School in Year 7 and would particularly like to thank my Geography teacher, Mrs Atkins and Biology teacher, Mr Fuller, for their support, encouragement and inspirational approach to teaching. “Whilst I’m sad to leave the school behind, I’m looking forward to new opportunities and focusing on more independent study at Oxford, and a couple of friends will be joining me there.”

With 93% of students achieving grade A-C passes and so many fantastic results, the vast majority of students are guaranteed places at their first choice university, from Cambridge to Cardiff, with courses ranging from Medicine to Film Studies.  Dr Mascord said, “We are delighted by the achievement of all our students which reflect the hard work and dedication they have shown through their A level careers.  I wish all of them every success in their future plans and we look forward to hearing of their further successes.”
