Spanish, Russian, German, French
Bristol Grammar School has a strong tradition with modern foreign languages. We aim to help our students take their place as citizens of the 21st century international world by equipping them with up-to-date linguistic knowledge and skills that will be of direct relevance to them in later life. In the process we hope they will enjoy the experience and share our enthusiasm for linguistic learning in general, and our affection in particular for the languages and cultures of France, Germany, Russia and Spain.
All students learn French and Latin in Year 7 and add Spanish to this in Year 8. When they enter Year 9 all have the chance to start German or Russian or continue a classical language. For GCSE, they choose at least one modern foreign language, but may take two from French, German, Russian or Spanish.
The faculty is equipped with its own multimedia suite equipped with language configured computers (opened in 2006), broadband internet connection and two blocks of specialist classrooms, all with digital data projectors and sound systems. We have assistants for all our languages that meet weekly with Sixth Form linguists and also help prepare GCSE students for their speaking tests by working with small groups in lessons. In addition we offer an extensive programme of foreign trips and visits to France, Germany, Russia and Spain. Other highlights during the year include the biennial Modern Languages Soirée (an evening of songs, sketches and food in November) and reading competition in the Spring Term.
