Music

Music is part of the curriculum for all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9. It is then an optional subject at GCSE and A Level. Currently we follow the EdExcel syllabus at GCSE and at A Level.

The course begins from first principles and – through group listening, performance and composition – explores a very wide range of topics. Worksheets draw on the full range of music from Bach to Bobby McFerrin, and make much use of music with which pupils will already be familiar.

From this beginning an interest is shown in all types of music. By the end of three years pupils have studied such diverse elements as symphony, Sprechgesang, jazz, opera, minimalism and even The Prodigy. In all cases they listen, compose and perform in all these styles using voice, keyboards, tuned and untuned percussion, and where appropriate their own instruments.

Facilities

The music school provides modern facilities for class teaching, individual and group practice. Facilities include a keyboard suite and a recording studio, with a comprehensive supply of the latest music technology, including sequencing software and Sibelius notation software. Individual private tuition in all musical instruments and in singing is available in School as an optional extra.

Choirs, orchestras and the school musical

In addition, there are many opportunities for extra curricular music making, including a youth choir, a female choir, a training orchestra, a jazz band, a wind orchestra, a string orchestra, various smaller ensembles, a fine senior orchestra and the BGS choir. All of these rehearse regularly and give several concerts throughout the year, both in School and, by invitation, further afield. A school musical is produced every other year. There are opportunities for less-specialised music making in Sixth Form general studies and in the activities programme.
