The BGS Blog

From Reception to Sixth Form

Think back to September 2012: Mr MacKinnon was Headmaster, the PAC hadn’t been built yet, and Andy Murray had just won his first Grand Slam. It was also the month that Lilian, Daniel and their classmates started in BGS Reception - and now, 14 years later, they’re approaching the end of Upper Sixth, making it the perfect time to look back on their BGS journey from Reception to Sixth Form.

What do you remember about being in Infants at BGS?

Daniel: The main thing I remember about my time in Infant school is my Year 2 teacher. He helped me so much - that was when I had just been diagnosed with dyslexia. What I remember most clearly, is how he always took the time to help me.

A lot can happen over 14 years – what is something that has stayed the same throughout your time at BGS?

Lilian: Throughout my time at BGS, one thing that has stayed the same is the number of opportunities and experiences that I have been able to get involved with, from going on trips to performing in productions and House events! As well as this, a highlight is the care and support that each teacher has provided me throughout my time here. They have made sure that I know who I can go to for any general questions and academic help.

And what has changed the most?

Lilian: One thing that has changed more recently at BGS is the new no-phone policy. This has created a positive environment in which we can build upon friendships in school, instead of being distracted by our phones.

Daniel: Since Reception, I have remained as talkative as ever, but I believe that I have learned to listen to what others have to say.

When you were in Reception what did you want to be when you grew up?

Lilian: In Reception, when I grew up, I wanted to be a performer on stage - singing and dancing. BGS gave me great opportunities to get involved in events like the TeaTime Concert and later in Juniors, Performing Arts Day, MADD evening and a trip to Young Voices every year – which I know they still do now.

And what do you want to do when you grow up now?!

Lilian: Now, I’d love to work in Psychology alongside the possibility of taking showjumping into my career path. Taking A Level Psychology has really helped to further my interest into a career that helps people!

Daniel: At the moment, I am looking to do a degree in Chemistry. I cannot remember exactly what I wanted to be in Reception, but throughout my time at BGS, I know that all my teachers have supported me in whatever path I have wanted to go down.
