Bristol Grammar School's girls’ rugby 7s programme is making history in its first year, and what a journey it’s been so far! With two tournaments under their belts – Clifton College 7s and the West of England 7s – the U16 and U14 teams have already shown incredible progress, finishing 4th and 3rd, respectively, in their latest competition.
Now, the teams are getting ready to face their biggest challenge yet: Rosslyn Park 7s. Our boys' sides have been regulars at Rosslyn Park for many years, but this is the first time BGS has taken girls' teams to take part in what is the world's largest school rugby tournament. Competing on Monday and Tuesday (24 & 25 March), the girls will showcase their skills against some of the best school teams in the country. A special highlight sees the U16s play in a live-streamed match on Monday at 12pm –tune in here: Watch live.
The enthusiasm from players, parents, and coaches has been fantastic. Following the West of England tournament, one parent shared:
"My daughter has come back really enthused about today, which was amazing considering she was so nervous! It’s lovely to see girls’ and women’s rugby thriving in school."
Meanwhile, Tabitha, one of our U16 players, reflected on her experience:
"I decided to play rugby because I wanted to be involved in another team sport. I had always played in the garden with my brothers, and I’m really enjoying learning how to play and having lots of fun doing so. We all are really enjoying getting physical and running quickly, and I am super excited for the Rosslyn Park tournament."
Her team mate Niamh said:
"I have always wanted to try rugby, so when I heard that school was starting a team I wanted to join. I have enjoyed gaining experience by playing in a few tournaments and learning important skills from our training sessions. The first match we played was against Clifton College and we beat them which was a huge accomplishment as they are a strong side. Going to Rosslyn Park is very exciting and I hope we do as well as we can."
We are so proud of everything our girls have achieved already and can’t wait to see them in action at Rosslyn Park. Best of luck to both teams!
