We were very pleased to host the Bristol Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge in the Great Hall on Saturday and to make a full return to in-person chess tournaments. The event attracted a large entry of over 200 children, from across the local area and further afield. There was a big BGS contingent, including 25 pupils from Years 3 to 6 in BGS Juniors and 12 from Years 7 to 9 of the Senior School. For several children, this was their first tournament and it provided a very enjoyable introduction to competitive chess. A good number of our pupils achieved qualification to the next round of the UK Chess Challenge, the Gigafinal, which will take place over the summer. Particular congratulations are due to our two top performers: Jonathan in Year 9 came top in the Under 14 Boys’ section, and Kandara (also in Year 9) came top in the Under 14 Girls’ section and also finished as runner-up in the mixed Under 18 category with 5 wins out of 6.
