David Watts

We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Old Bristolian and former Chair of Governors David Watts. He died peacefully at home in August, aged 85, after a short illness.

David was a pupil at BGS from 1945–1956, attending Oxford University after leaving. He remained involved with BGS throughout his life. An active member of the Old Bristolians, he served as President of the Old Bristolians Society in 2007. He also gave a great deal of time and expertise to the School through his work on our Board of Governors.

David became a Governor in 1984 and served until 2007. Over his long service as a Governor, he worked with three BGS Headmasters: Roy Avery, 1984-1986; Charles Martin, 1986-1999; and David Mascord, 1999-2008. As Chair of Governors, David helped to guide BGS through the process of Incorporation, which saw the School become independent from Bristol Municipal Charities (now Bristol Charities).

All of us at BGS are very grateful for David’s friendship and support for the School, given over so many years. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. A Service of Thanksgiving for David’s life will be held at St Mary Magdalene Church, Stoke Bishop, Bristol on Friday 30 September at 2.30pm.
