Bristol Grammar School’s IB diploma cohort are celebrating an impressive set of results. Two-thirds of the students who completed this international qualification were awarded 37 points (equivalent to A*AA at A level) or above, well ahead of the global average score of 30.24.
Seven of these students were awarded 40 points or higher; this is equivalent to gaining 4 grade A* at A level and places them in the top 10% of IB diploma students globally. Impressively, three students scored 42 or higher, a result achieved only by the top 2% of entrants to this global qualification.
Future courses and locations chosen by our IB students are diverse and exciting. Destinations include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Exeter, Birmingham and Manchester among others, with our IB cohort moving on to courses ranging from Medicine to Electronic Music Production.
The IB Diploma qualification, which is one of the two Sixth Form pathways on offer at BGS, allows students to study a wider range of subjects concurrently, demonstrating a depth and breadth of knowledge.
This breadth, which enabled him to continue studying all the subjects he enjoyed, was what drew future Medic Rubin to join BGS for the IB. Reflecting on his move to BGS Sixth Form he said: “It was daunting at first, but everyone was welcoming, and I settled in really quickly. I’m glad I made the move.”
Jake, who also joined BGS in the Sixth Form, said: “I came to BGS specifically to study the IB and I’m so glad that I did, it’s opened many opportunities and allowed me to pursue my passions.”
Reflecting on her IB experience Head of School, Ruby said: “It has been a bit stressful at times, but in the long-run it has been a really rewarding experience and I do feel it has helped prepare me for university.”
This sentiment was echoed by Hazel, who will be studying Medicine: “Juggling my workload, the time management skills, and independent study experience the IB has given me will be really useful in my future studies and life.”
David, who has a place at Imperial to study Physics with Theoretical Physics, told us: “The best thing about studying the IB at BGS is the friends that you make, it’s such a tight knit group. We’ve supported each other the whole way through, and it’s made for a fun two years.”
Summing up the group’s achievement, IB Coordinator Ben Schober said: “The IB diploma is a rigorous and challenging qualification, but one which is also immensely rewarding. As a cohort they have come so far and made such amazing progress across the board. We have a set of results to be immensely proud of and a set of young people of whom we are equally proud. Well done to them all.”
