Water, water everywhere

Year 3 visited a Wessex Water site this week to find out more about water and what happens to it before it reaches our homes.

Taking a tour of the works, the children found out about each stage of the process, from removing the bits of sand, mud and twigs from the reservoir water, adding chlorine gas to remove bacteria, to adding bits of carbon to make it taste and smell nice.

Back in the classroom, they worked in teams to identify different sources of water using their senses and carried out a PH test to identify how acidic or alkaline water is in city areas, compared to the countryside.

Finishing the day as nature detectives, they all took a lovely walk around the reservoir in the sunshine, looking for signs of different types of wildlife.
