Prestigious Army scholarship for BGS Sixth-former

Congratulations to BGS Sixth-former Sophie who has been awarded an Army Officer scholarship. This is a prestigious achievement, awarded annually to only the top 100 candidates in the whole of the UK. The competition for each place is very fierce and the selection process is highly demanding; Sophie had to pass an initial application, an interview, and three days of demanding leadership, physical fitness, mental aptitude and memory tests, often completed under challenging conditions.

The scholarship will support Sophie through her final year of Sixth Form and during her university studies. After university, she has a guaranteed place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Sophie hopes to gain a place to study Medicine at university, meaning she will complete a five year degree and two years as a Junior Doctor, before taking up her place at Sandhurst.

While not every aspiring medic might be attracted to the idea of working on the frontline or in field hospitals, Sophie was drawn to the army by the opportunity to practice medicine in wider variety of settings than might be available in a standard UK hospital. As well as providing medical care for British troops, the army will give Sophie the opportunity to be involved in humanitarian and development work, delivering health care, and advice and education across the world.

We are very proud of Sophie’s achievement in being selected for this award and wish her similar success in the university selection process in the coming months.
