New Pi day record at BGS

Pi Day is celebrated on 14 March, chosen because numerically it represents the first three digits of pi: 3.14. On the day, Bristol Grammar School holds an annual competition to discover which student can recite the most digits of pi from memory. The competition has run for over 10 years with many students gaining multiple hundreds of places – the school record, set in 2021, was an astonishing 1,067 places!

We thought the record would stand for years but, on Pi Day 2023, BGS Sixth Form student Anya Comer recited an incredible 1,151 places of pi. Not only does this give her the school record but we believe that this makes her the highest recorded British female of all time, as per the Pi World Ranking List. Well done, Anya.

Anya says she started to learn pi about a week ahead of the big day. With a year until Pi Day comes around again, if you’d like to try and beat Anya’s record, you’ve got plenty of time. To get you started, here are the first 11 decimal places: 3.14159265359 – just another 1,140+ to go…
