The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme was introduced at BGS in 2018, as a fantastic alternative to A levels, and our second cohort of IB students have just received their results.
This cohort was eighteen strong, and these students have, individually and collectively, achieved outstanding results, as befitting the calibre and dedication of these young men and women.
The IB Organisation awarded grades this year based on external examination of all pupils’ Internal Assessment work in each of their six subjects, and on the core components of the Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, in addition to evidence-based predicted grades submitted by schools.
Our students collectively achieved an outstanding mean score of 40 points out of a possible 45. (By way of context, this score has a UCAS tariff equivalence of around 4 A* grades at A level). One of our students achieved the maximum 45 points, and three others achieved 44 points – usually achieved by around 0.5% and 1.5% of the global cohort, respectively.
More than for their individual and collective grade successes, we are proud of all of our pioneering IB students for their resilience, commitment and humour, over these last two extraordinary years. They are, truly, a wonderful bunch of young men and women – kind and collaborative in their manner, rounded and globally aware in their outlook, and – as per the IB philosophy – ready to make the world a better and more peaceful place.
They move on to courses from Philosophy to Physics, Music to Medicine, Classics to Cognitive Science, and they do so at some of the top universities in the UK and abroad, including Oxford and, for one of our students, the prestigious Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne in Switzerland, where he will be studying International Hospitality Management.
We are incredibly proud of all the students in this year’s IB cohort, and we wish them all the very best as they move on to their exciting next steps.
The IB Diploma is an alternative to A levels which offers breadth of learning (students choose six subjects from across the range of disciplines) as well as depth and academic rigour. It also mandates cross-curricular thinking, global awareness, research, synthesis and extended writing skills, an understanding of the nature of knowledge across different disciplines, and participation in the Creativity, Activity and Service projects. As such, it is an outstanding preparation for higher education.
