Caught in a trap
23 February 2018
The Theatre was transformed into a Mumbai slum today (Friday 23 February), when Year 9 took part in a Poverty Trap simulation. The day was organised and run by the charity Empathy Action whose aim is to increase empathy and raise awareness of global deprivation.
Year 9 found themselves toiling away to create papier-mâché bags as a way to earn money to hopefully support themselves and their ‘family’. There were difficult choices to make around paying for food, sanitation, education and health care and dealing with a very fierce landlord, bringing home to our students just how hard it is for the world’s poorest citizens to survive.
