Chess success for Chirag

Recently one of Bristol’s strongest chess tournaments in recent years took place in the Great Hall – the Summer Congress of the Bristol Chess League.

It involved over 140 players in total, from Juniors upwards and the top section, The Open, included one grandmaster, two international masters and two Fide masters, attracting players from as far afield as London. We were delighted that Year 9 BGS pupil, Chirag, managed to finish half-way through this elite section of the tournament, managing a draw against an International Master in one of his games. He is clearly a very strong prospect for the future, given the results which he already achieving at the age of fourteen.

Bristol Grammar School is committed to maintain its role as the major chess hub in the region, regularly staging all the weekend tournaments for the local chess league, as well as several individual and inter-school junior tournaments throughout the year.

We are pleased that our extensive support of chess has been recognised by the English Chess Federation, with an award for the school for 2019 from the British Chess Educational Trust, following nominations from the organisers of the National Schools’ Championships.
