Bristol Grammar School celebrates brilliant IB results

Students at Bristol Grammar School are celebrating a fantastic set of IB Diploma results, with many now set to take up places at their first-choice universities across the UK and overseas.

The 2026 BGS cohort has attained an impressive average score of 38 points out of 45 in one of the school's strongest IB performances to date, with one student securing a maximum of 45 points, and two further students achieving 43 points, placing them among the highest-performing IB students internationally.

Overall, 70% of BGS students achieved Grade 7/6 which is the equivalent to A*/A. These results open doors to a wide range of exciting university destinations and courses, for our BGS cohort this includes Physics at University College London, Economics at the University of Warwick, International Relations at King's College London, Medicine at the University of Leeds, Law at University of Leeds and one student who will go on to study Medicine in Poland.

Andy Jarvis, IB Coordinator for BGS said:

"These outstanding results are a fitting reflection of an exceptional group of young people. They have supported one another throughout their IB journey, contributed enormously to the life of the school through sport, music, drama, Model United Nations and Duke of Edinburgh, and have grown tremendously over the past two years. We are immensely proud not only of their academic achievements, but also of the character, resilience and camaraderie they have shown. We wish them every success as they embark on the next stage of their journey."

The cohort also excelled in the IB Core programme, which includes the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, achieving an average of two out of three available core points, with three students earning the maximum score. Three students also achieved the top grade of A in Theory of Knowledge.

Matthew Pattie, Deputy Head (Academic) said:

"We are immensely proud of our final IB cohort and all they have achieved. These outstanding results are a fitting culmination of their hard work, resilience and intellectual curiosity. As the last pupils to complete the IB Diploma at BGS, they leave a legacy, not only through their academic success, but also through the contribution they have made to every aspect of school life. We congratulate them warmly and wish them every success as they begin the next exciting chapter."

Reflecting on her IB experience, Miranda who was awarded the full 45 points said:

“The IB Diploma was really hard work, but also really rewarding, I am so happy with my results and that all the hard work has paid off! I am going to study Physics at University College of London, and I’d like to thank my subject teachers for their support and helping me get my results.”

Olivia who will go on to study International Relations at Kings College London, and achieved 43 points said:

This has been one of the hardest challenges I have faced and harder than I expected! I couldn’t have done it without my parents, friends and teacher support…and I am really proud of my achievement and that it means I can go on to my first-choice university in September.”

Beyond academic, the students made a significant contribution to the wider life of the school, taking leading roles in music, sport, theatre, dance, Model United Nations and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Their achievements reflect the collaborative spirit and broad education that have been hallmarks of the IB programme at BGS.

As the IB Diploma programme comes to an end nationally, the 2026 BGS cohort leave behind an enduring legacy of ambition, curiosity and community, and the entire BGS community looks forward to following their future successes.
