We were delighted to host a “Team Chess Challenge Event” in the Great Hall on Monday evening – our first major over-the-board chess tournament for over two years.
This involved 34 teams from 15 schools across the south-west region and over 140 players in total ranging in age from Year 6 through to Upper Sixth.
This made it one of the largest regional qualifying events in the country and it was a great way to get back into normal chess competitions after a long period of exclusively online events.
The four teams which represented BGS all did very well. Particular congratulations are due to our first team of Chirag and Jay (in the Lower Sixth) and Kandara and Jonathan (in Year 9), who finished in first place overall after several hard-fought victories against our local rivals.
As regional winners, they have secured a place in the national finals which will take place next term, for which we wish them every success.
