On the afternoon of Friday 5 June, our chess team competed in their first online inter-school chess tournament, organised by the English Chess Federation and featuring a number of schools which reached the latter stages of the National Schools’ Chess Championships. My heart missed a beat or two when BGS took an early lead, which unfortunately wasn’t sustained as we slipped a little down the leader-board towards the end to finish in joint fifth place. But our players relished the experience and did very well overall against strong opposition - it remained close between the top teams throughout. This promises to be the start of a regular online inter-school competition. Vishal in Year 7 should be congratulated as our top-scoring player in this event, winning six blitz games in one hour. And we’ve already had two online BGS chess tournaments – won by Chirag in Year 10 and Kandara in Year 7 respectively. These will continue on a weekly basis on Tuesdays at 4pm until the end of term. Please see the weekly emails or contact Mr Iwi on giwi@bgs.bristol.sch.uk for details of how to take part in these tournaments.
