ISI inspectors praise expert teaching and pastoral care at BGS

Following our ISI School Inspection at the end of April; we now have our full report and are really pleased to be able to share the findings with you.

These inspections take place every three years and focus on day-to-day life here at BGS. They review how we, as a school, meet the independent school standards by assessing key areas such as quality of education, physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and leadership. The inspection is a chance for the inspectors to meet our pupils, experience our lessons, find out about everything that goes on beyond the classroom, and take a deep dive into what makes BGS special.

The report reflects the ethos that we work hard to create at BGS: a school where pupils are challenged, supported and encouraged to explore their interests both in and beyond the classroom. Many of these insights come directly from conversations and interactions with our pupils, who were apparently happy to share openly without any prompting or preparation!

These genuine reflections on life at BGS and how pupils feel about their school speak volumes about the high quality of learning and the rich range of opportunities available every day at BGS. Most importantly, they highlight the enthusiasm, engagement and involvement of our pupils, which sits at the heart of the BGS experience.

I have outlined a few highlights and excepts from the report below and would invite you to read the full report, available here: BGS-ISI-Inspection-report-2026

  • A broad and engaging curriculum and co-curriculum
Inspectors praised the thoughtfully designed curriculum, which promotes intellectual curiosity and helps pupils develop knowledge, skills and understanding across a wide range of subjects. It also noted that, “an enriching programme of co-curricular activities provides opportunities for pupils to further develop their skills and interests.”
  • Expert, thought-provoking teaching
Referring to our teachers as experts in their subject, the report stated, Teachers skilfully use their expert subject knowledge to engage pupils in thought-provoking teaching which further their progress and develops their skills and knowledge well. Teachers ensure that pupils connect their learning to broader and relevant social and cultural issues to deepen their understanding. Well-planned teaching supports pupils to make good progress.”
  • High level of pastoral care
When reviewing the Pupil’s physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing, the BGS pastoral care system was praised, stating: “Leaders prioritise pupils’ mental health and emotional wellbeing. Close liaison between teaching and pastoral staff, as well as the medical centre, ensure pupils receive a high level of care. Pupils know that there is extensive support available to them if needed.”
  • Strong foundations in the early years
Inspectors recognised the care and planning that goes into our Early Years provision, where children are encouraged to explore, communicate and learn through engaging activities and positive relationships. The report stated, “Leaders ensure that children develop in all the required areas of learning though well-planned activities, effective teaching and positive relationships. Leaders actively consider children’s feedback to devise a curriculum that takes account of their interests as well as their needs. Children explore, investigate and develop communication and language skills as they play and learn in engaging environments.”
  • SEND identification and support
The SEND support at BGS was also reported, highlighting: “The early identification of pupils who have SEND enables leaders to ensure that these pupils benefit from appropriate support, including access to study skills sessions and individual and group support by suitably trained staff.”
  • Respect, inclusion and understanding
The report detailed that pupils “recognise the importance of respecting all people, regardless of their individual identity. Through the curriculum, assemblies and speaker programme, pupils learn about inclusion, cultural diversity and different faiths. As a result, they engage well with wider social, political and cultural issues.”
Pupils value the extensive range of leadership roles available to them and the opportunity this gives to contribute to their school community.
  • Well-designed support programme for smooth transitions through school and for future careers and study
The report praised the support programme in place that helps “pupils’ transition to their next stage in education, training and employment. The well-designed programme ensures that pupils make smooth transitions from one part of the school to the next, as well as preparing them to go on to future careers and study.”

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and carers for your continued support of the school. We know these are challenging times for many families, and your partnership with the school is hugely valued. This report is a reminder of the dedication our staff show every day in caring for and educating your children.

Thank you for being such an important part of the BGS community.
