On a sunny Sunday morning in May, BGS hosted an activity morning for sixteen local young carers. Their ages ranged from 12 to 16. South Gloucestershire coaches generously donated a coach to bring them to the School. Lynne Bolton and Ellen Sutton provided the opportunity for them all to make a savoury and sweet dish to take home. Five Lower-sixth students, assisted by Fran Ripley, set up and participated in the rounders and quick cricket sessions outside the PAB.
Thanks to the generosity of Morrisons, we were able to finish the morning with a BBQ lunch and refreshments. The whole morning was a huge success and in the words of the young carers' co-ordinator from the careers support centre: “It was great for them to have positive role models and I overheard a couple of the younger ones saying how they were inspired to go to Sixth Form. We were given such a warm welcome and I was really touched by how the staff interacted with the young carers, paying a real interest in them and ensuring they were all enjoying themselves. We are very grateful for all the efforts your school went to, please could you pass on our thanks to everyone involved.”
