Bristol Grammar School’s 2025 IB Diploma cohort is celebrating an excellent set of results which saw all 18 students secure places at universities of their choice to continue their studies beyond BGS.
Reflecting on the cohort’s success, Deputy Head (Academic) Matthew Pattie said:
“We are incredibly proud of our penultimate IB cohort and the results they have achieved. The IB is a demanding and enriching qualification that cultivates curiosity, resilience and global awareness – qualities that will serve them well beyond the classroom as they move on from their schooldays and BGS. They also leave behind a rich legacy, having contributed with enthusiasm and leadership across school life – from music, sport and drama to Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh, and countless other areas. Their impact has been felt widely, and they depart with our warmest congratulations and admiration.”
The IB Diploma comprises three Higher Level subjects and three at Standard Level, each marked out of 7, with the Core Elements – Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) – contributing up to an additional 3 points, for a maximum possible score of 45.
This year at BGS, an impressive 56% of all grades were 6s and 7s – equivalent to A*/A at A Level. One student achieved an outstanding 43/45, while four students scored over 40 points, placing them among the top IB candidates globally.
Reflecting on her IB experience, Daisy said:
“I loved how the IB let me tailor my learning to my own interests – I didn't have to limit myself to the content that we were studying in lessons. Through coursework, I explored everything from environmental issues in my French oral to analysing breakfast menus in my Extended Essay and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet in my TOK essay.”
Daisy will be studying Medicine and feels the IB has helped her develop a holistic, globally minded approach:
“Studying Economics and French alongside the sciences gave me a better understanding of healthcare as part of a wider social and international context, which I’ve found valuable.”
Daisy and her fellow IB students are heading off to an impressive and diverse range of destinations, including Oxford, UCL, Bristol, St Andrews and York, with one student choosing to study in Spain. Courses span a broad academic spectrum, from Medicine, English and History, to Pharmaceutical Science, International Human Rights Law, Chemical Physics, and History and Philosophy.
We congratulate them all on their success and wish them the very best as they move on to the next chapter in their lives and education.
