With the role and the actions of the United Nations under the spotlight as never before, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, interest in the Model United Nations is as keen as ever at BGS. Model United Nations is an opportunity for students to represent countries that are member states of the UN. The aim is to try and pacify conflicts through negotiations and debate, by discussing relevant crises and issues, and try to pass resolutions and amendments in favour of your allocated country's views.
The BGS MUN team have already attended two events this term. The first was hosted by Exeter College where our students made up delegations representing Ireland, South Sudan and South Korea. They were spread across three different committees, alongside students from a host of other West Country schools. For most of those attending this was their first ever MUN event (with some only having started MUN this term), so it proved quite an experience. Although BGS missed out on the top prize for best delegation, Henry (L6) picked up the prize for Best Delegate in his committee, so special congratulations to him on this impressive accomplishment.
This was followed by MUNCH, hosted by Cheadle Hulme School in Manchester. This is a large and well-attended MUN event, drawing pupils from schools across the UK. Our students had a great weekend up in Manchester and thoroughly enjoyed the high level of debate on offer across the various committees and sessions. The whole group performed extremely well, but particular congratulations go to the following Lower Sixth students: Damon, highly commended in his committee; Olwyn and Keziah, commended in their committees; and Rory and Henry who both got a special mention.
