BGS girls' rugby learn from the best

The BGS girls’ rugby team has relaunched after many years absence. What started as four girls playing mixed touch rugby with the Sixth Form boys' team in the Summer term last year has now increased to thirteen girls training every Thursday in the Sixth Form Games session.

Last week we were lucky enough to be coached by Dave Ward, Head Coach at Bristol Bears Women. This session was an amazing introduction for the new players and incorporated games alongside learning the basics of rugby as a group. Everyone enjoyed the session and we are grateful to Dave for coming along – none of us could have imagined being coached by someone as knowledgeable and experienced as him on week two of training together!

Rugby is an amazing sport, especially in the sense of community you quickly find as a team and it is something I would encourage everyone to have a go at at least once. Whether you have ten years of experience or none there is a place on the team for you; if you are in Year 11–13 and would be interested in joining then please speak to Mr Schober.

Unlike most other sports, rugby is a game immediately accessible to all levels. People play for twenty years and still learn new things about the game every time they get onto the pitch. At the same time, a new player can become a key player on her team so come along and have a try even if you think it is out of your comfort zone!
