On 20 May BGS hosted another big chess tournament in the Great Hall – the inaugural Bristol Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge. Approximately 200 children from primary schools across the city competed in this event, a six-round quickplay chess tournament, for which there was a sizeable BGS contingent of nineteen pupils from Years 3 to 7.
The UK Chess Challenge is the world’s biggest chess tournament in terms of the number of entries and we were delighted to have been chosen as the venue for the Bristol qualifier.
We were also very pleased that eight Junior School players qualified for the next round, the Southern Gigafinal, which takes place in July: Magnus, Oliver, Ishaan, Jay, Evie, Anvith, Benjamin and Hana. Congratulations also to Year 7 students Sashank and Chirag who came equal top in the U12 section.
