Practical magic
8 March 2018
Our students wowed the audience at today's (Thursday 8 March) STEM Café, demonstrating their levitation powers thanks to Acoustic Levitation.
We were delighted to welcome Asier Marzo from the University of Bristol (Engineering Department) to present a talk on this fascinating subject. Acoustic Levitation uses the energy of sound to hold solids, liquids and even insects in mid-air without any physical contact. Asier explained the science behind the technique and outlined some of its practical applications.
During the week preceding the Café, our students had been hard at work building their own Levitators. Despite the loss of one session to the snow, they were proud to be able to show off their working products in the Café.
