Well done to BGS Sixth Form students, Tillie (U6) and Adiyat (L6), who spoke articulately and with great maturity when they were interviewed on BCfm’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday 8 November about all things eco at BGS, as part of the station’s Earth Week.
Breakfast show presenter Penny Southgate invited the BGS pupils on after hearing them speak at the recent Bristol Education Partnership Climate Challenge Event at City Hall. In the radio interview, they explained about BGS’s year-group Eco Clubs and whole school Climate Committee, through which pupils can put forward initiatives to educate and inform fellow pupils, and to improve the school’s sustainability. Thanks to their hard work, last year the school gained its Eco-School’s Green Flag Award.
They also talked about eco anxiety – something Tillie learnt about through her involvement with the Avon Schools Eco network and training from the charity Force of Nature – popular protest and the role of the Bristol Education Partnership in raising awareness of climate change and exchanging ideas.
Penny also asked them about COP 27 and what they would say to world leaders if they were given the floor, with Adiyat responding:
“COP is a great platform for people to have their views heard, and especially having so many leaders and Heads of State from around the world listen to you there…. Probably the most important thing is that so much of climate change is caused by the actions of big companies … to address that problem at the root would be something that I think is essential to tackling climate change. The more the narrative is pushed onto us that it the individual’s fault, the less that we are able to do anything to stop it.”
